I’m so excited to share my skincare journey with you. It’s taken me years to get my skin where it is now and while I still have some improvements I’d love to see, I can finally say that I’m happy in the skin I’m in.
I used to use a lot of products on my skin, too many in fact. I was suffering from acne and breakouts well into my adult years that I couldn’t seem to get rid of. I didn’t know what was causing it, but I was ready to try anything and everything to cure it. I thought the stronger the better!
I used to wash my face morning and night with harsh, drying cleansers, and then I would follow up with toners that promised to peel away extra dead layers of skin. I did the cleanse and tone step twice a day. Additionally once or twice a week I used to scrub my face in the shower with an exfoliating product too. This all added up to too much processing of my skin. I was also not eating healthfully, my diet included a lot of junk food, sugar, and processed foods, and certainly not enough water.
All that rough treatment, from both inside and out, was just too much and left my skin parched dry, easily irritated, and very sensitive. Something had to give! I stumbled into my current routine by accident, by way of getting fed up and defaulting to being lazy! None of the harsh products I was using were doing me any good. Sure they would dry out my blemishes but in their place I’d be left with dry, flaky skin that took time to heal and sometimes scarring too. My skin always felt dry and tight, and I needed heavy moisturizers to feel OK in my own skin.
As I didn’t see the results I hoped for, I slowly began to abandon the products I was using. First I got lazy with toner after washing my face. Next, instead of washing my face morning and night, I started skipping the morning one because I’d gone to bed with no makeup and a freshly washed face anyway. So my lazy girl solution was to simply rinse in the morning.
Slowly I started seeing that my skin seemed to be healing itself the less I did to it. So I started researching… I discovered that I was definitely overdoing it, and there’s a growing trend nowadays of having a much simpler skin regimen. I’m a huge advocate of simplifying your routine if you’re having skin issues. Your skin can really heal itself if we simply get out of the way and gently nourish it, inside and out.
Now I just use two products daily and two others maybe every 2-4 days. Here’s what I’m loving right now:
- Philosophy Hope in a Jar face cream: I use this every morning on a freshly rinsed face. It’s lightweight but very hydrating and feel so good
- Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream: I’ve used this eye cream for years now, it’s the richest under eye cream I have found. I find it very soothing and relaxing when I put it on and I think it’s helping prevent fine lines from furthering. I use this 1 or 2 times a day
- Philosophy Time in a Bottle serum: This serum is like magic, I use it every few days. When I use it consistently though I can see an difference in as little as a week. My skin looks a lot smoother, hydrated, plump and youthful
- Philosophy Purity face cleanser: This is a great, gentle cleanser to each use night after you remove your makeup. I don’t always do this at night, I often just use 1-2 makeup wipes and then leave my skin to breathe overnight. However I would recommend a very gentle cleanser like this one in the evening
And that’s all I use! I also noticed great improvements in my skin once I began drinking a lot more water each day, consistently getting enough sleep, which combats stress, and a huge improvement once I starting eating a lot more whole fruits and vegetables. I believe that sweating is really good for the skin as well, it’s how the skin rids itself of toxins, so it’s another benefit of exercise, just be sure to always replenish with plenty of water. It all starts within, nourishing yourself from the inside goes hand in hand with any treatments you do on the skin’s surface.
I hope this was helpful, leave me any questions you have down below. What are some of your favorite skincare products of the moment? I’d love to hear about them so leave me a comment. Thank you for reading!
